Prayer Journal - August 2011

1 GLOBAL August 1-30 is the Holy Muslim month of Ramadan (fasting from sunrise to sunset).  Pray for our workers in countries dominated by Islam that they will stay safe in traffic with many irritable and sleepy drivers and that they will have many opportunities to talk with their friends and contacts about what fasting is for.  Also pray for the 26th night of Ramadan when Muslims seek God.  The “breaking of the fast – Iftar” parties are great places to share one’s faith.

2 SPAIN Carey and Sharon Owen write, “Pray for God's provision for the building of the first phase of the Evangelical Christian School for Sevilla. This school will be staffed by believers but the students will be almost all unbelievers. Historically in Spain this has been a successful way to reach people and now there is once again a great need for good education. Pray for God to open the way.”

3 AFRICA Zimbabwe Pray for the Harare Theological

College as they seek to register with the ministry of Higher Education and affiliate with a local university  (requirements of the Zimbabwean government). Pray HTC will not be adversely affected by these requirements and will find favor in the eyes of the authorities.

4 CHURCH CONNECTIONS Pray that missionaries on home assignment will be able to coach their churches in how to effectively engage in global ministry.

5 NORTH ASIA Missionaries have a baby that is ill with a terrible intestinal infection.  Continue to lift up the parents as they are very tired.  They are in the process of taking their baby back to the US for medical care. Please pray that they would get appointments with the right doctors that can identify the problem and prescribe a treatment that will be quickly effective.

6 GLOBAL Pray for wisdom for missionary kids to decide on colleges to attend after graduation next year.

7 GERMANY Pray for Diet Schindler as he speaks at a special open air evangelistic service in the German city of Haiger. Pray that God would use Diets words to draw people closer to himself.

8 AUSTRIA Pray that God will provide a house and center for Heart Factory. More and more women are wanting to leave prostitution, but have no place to go and no income. They need a safe place to experience God’s love first hand and begin the process of healing and learning to trust.

9 AFRICA Chad Pray for Scott and Suz Downing who received two young families for their ministry team.  Now the Downings have the big task of getting them through orientation and language study.  Pray for them as they focus on teambuilding as well as maintain the momentum in their own ministry of well drilling and pioneer evangelism.  Suz is also homeschooling their children.

10 US TEAMServe Several people will be returning from short-term mission trips and participating in a time of “debriefing” at the TEAM home office on Aug. 9-11.  Pray that God would give these people direction as they process their experiences and figure out their next steps toward ministry.

11 MIDDLE EAST Workers write, “We'd like prayer for a couple who is meeting with us privately -  he is a secret national believer and she's a European believer. They've been hit by an incredible array of setbacks and hardships since he came to faith, yet he has national people coming up to him all the time wanting what he now has. Many nationals are seeking! We are taking him through a 12-week course and afterwards he'd like to be able to give the course to others who are seeking.”

12 APPOINTEES Pray for Ted and Rachel MacKinney who served in Central Asia for 15 years with TEAM and have stepped out of ministry for about 5 years to be with their college-aged kids.  God is now directing them to return.  Ted is a physician, and both of them have a great interest in training medical professionals as well as reaching out to a minority group from a nearby country.  Pray for them as they re-assemble their support team and return to ministry…this time without children.

13 ITALY Missionaries write, “Pray for S, a believer of many years, who struggles with trusting the Lord in a severe family trial,  in which she is living. 14 PAPUA Gail Vinje, TEAM missionary who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, writes, “I will be in Papua June 24- August 19 to close up. This will be a very hard time for me after 35 years of ministry there.  Pray for my health, both emotionally and physically, during my time in Papua.”

20 MEXICO Art and Vicki Reyes write, “Our church plans to move to the new land in mid-August.  We hope to to meet under a structure with shade until we start building.  Art found a house for rent exactly in front of our land.  Omar and his family live in the house and can keep an eye on the land. The first floor will be used for the church nursery and pre-school Sunday classes.  Please pray for the transition from a rental house to our own property.”

21 APPOINTEES Pray for workers who leave this month for the Middle East where they’ll begin language study.  Eventually, they’ll be working with a hospital tol use dentistry and orthodontist skills to minister there.  Thank God for full support and open doors for them.

30 CZECH REPUBLIC Mark and Gretchen Potma write, “Pray for us as we plan to host the “Lego Projekt” at Skalka from September 1-4. Each afternoon, the builders stop for a snack and a story from the Bible (told with the help of Legos). On the fourth day (Sunday), the kids can invite their family and friends to come to the church to see what they’ve created.”

31 PHILIPPINES David North writes,

“Last Sunday we listened to a message by Andy Stanley where he talked about some people who have a gift of evangelism where people just come up to them and ask them, ‘Can you tell me the way to heaven?’  Everybody on the DVD laughed at such an unrealistic idea… and we laughed along with them.

On Monday morning Kathy and I were browsing in a Christian bookstore.  We were asking the cashier if their bookstore would provide a book table for a LifeWorks program we are holding.   Kathy explained that LifeWorks is a 9 week night course where Christians can bring their unsaved friends to hear about the basic message of Christianity.

A lady who had been browsing in the store behind us, came up to us at the desk and interrupted, ‘That course you were just talking about, can I come to that?  That’s exactly what I need.’  We told her that it was completely sold out, but she said, ‘It doesn’t matter if I don’t get a meal or have a seat.  I’ll just stand in the back.  I just need to hear it.’ She told us she was in there looking at books and trying to find the way to God.   She said, ‘I want to know how I can be right with God, and be ready to meet Him one day.’

I realized we needed to make room for her at LifeWorks no matter what, but I also realized this was a ‘type A’ unbeliever, someone ready to accept the Lord who just needs someone to tell her. So I asked her, ‘Do you mean to say that you want to know God but you just don’t know how, and that you want to know that you will go to heaven one day, but you don’t know how to get there?’ She responded, ‘That’s exactly what I am saying.’  So I asked her if I could share with her right then how she could have a personal relationship with God and know she was on her way to heaven.  ‘Yes, please do,’ she responded.

After we shared the Gospel with her there in the book store, she accepted Christ with tears.  Later as Kathy and I drove home, we were stunned at what had just happened.”

Please pray for great response and follow up for the LifeWorks Program and for more divine appointments with people eager to hear about Jesus.
